SPRINGFIELD, Mo – Drury Volleyball opened the Drury Invitational with a 3-1 loss to seventh ranked Southwest Minnesota St. as Kayli Duncan sets the Drury single game record for blocks.
The Mustangs entered O’Reilly Family Event Center as the highest ranked team the Panthers have on their schedule throughout the season. Drury did not back down as the game started with a solo block from Kayli Duncan, that would be said a lot throughout the course of the night. Drury stuck with the Mustangs throughout the whole set falling, 25-23. The second was all Panthers. Lauren Tyler was distributing the ball all around the court picking up ten assists in the set. Drury was able to pick the win up and hand SMSU their first set loss of the season. SMSU responded in the third set taking the Panthers down by five. Drury was not able to respond in the fourth set to force a decisive, as the Mustangs won 25-19.
Mailie Chretien was responsible for 10.5 points while Kyla Club stepped up big recording 11 kills. Tyler ended up finishing the night with 28 assists, 10 kills, and two aces. However, the story of the night went to Kayli Duncan. Duncan hit .192 on attacks but stood out on the defensive end. She recorded a Drury single game record nine solo blocks in a single game. The recorded had been standing since 1992 when Tammy Lott set it with six blocks.
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow at 1pm against Southern Nazarene and at 5pm against Roosevelt.
