Trio of Mizzou Pitchers Selected on Final Day of MLB Draft

DALLAS — The 2024 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft concluded Tuesday with three University of Missouri baseball pitchers selected in the final 10 rounds. Senior left-hander Ryan Magdic was taken by Oakland in the 14th round (406th overall), before senior right-hander Carter Rustad went to Baltimore in the 15th round (459th overall) and junior right-hander Bryce Mayer was selected by Houston in the 17th round (493rd overall).

Magdic gave the Tigers a lift on the mound in his lone season with Mizzou, making 14 appearances — including four starts — and limiting the opposition to a .229 batting mark. The Beamsville, Ontario product struck out 37 hitters in 35.0 innings, logging a 1-3 record, 4.63 earned run average and two saves for MU.

Rustad, a three-year letterman for the Tigers, compiled a 17-9 record on the mound over his five-year collegiate career that included 171 strikeouts overall and 31 total appearances for Mizzou. This past spring, the Kansas City native led the Tigers with five victories and 58 punchouts. Rustad was a 2020 freshman All-America choice while pitching for San Diego, when he went 4-0 with an 0.84 ERA in the COVID-19-shortened season.

Mayer logged seven starts in 17 total appearances in his first season on the mound for Mizzou this past spring. The Marthasville, Mo., product also logged a save and finished the 2024 campaign with 57 strikeouts — good for second on the club — in 53.1 innings pitched.

With their three selections this season, the Tigers have seen 12 players drafted over the last three seasons, as well as a total of 40 picks over the last decade.
