Men’s Golf Maintains Second Place at Valley Tourney

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — The Missouri State men’s golf team held onto its second-place standing Monday (Apr. 22) at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship at The Club at Porto Cima. After opening with a 285 team score Sunday, the Bears posted 294 in the second round for a 579 total and are still chasing first-round leader Southern Illinois, which shot 287 Monday and opened up a 14-stroke lead with its 565 total.

Senior Max Kreikemeier led the way for MSU in the second round with a two-under-par 70, putting him at 143 for the tournament, one-under-par and tied for fifth with senior teammate Hampus Wijkstrom, who carded 76 Monday after sharing the overnight lead with an opening 67. The pair are seven shots behind leader Edouard Cereto of SIU.

Junior Ludvig Wijkstrom is next for the Bears in a tie for 17th with 72-75–147, while sophomore Christian Rischer is tied for 22nd after posting 73-76–149 the first two rounds. Senior Eric Schuessler has gone 80-73–153 and is tied for 33rd.

Valparaiso is in third place in the team race, four shots behind the Bears at 583, with Murray State (585) fourth and Belmont (588) fifth. Drake is sixth with 597, followed by Bradley (603), Evansville (604), Illinois State (607) and UNI (610) rounding out the scoring.

Tuesday’s final round begins at 8 a.m. with tee times off  no. 1 and no. 10. MSU’s times start at 8:50 off no. 1.
