Drury gets Senior Day sweep over William Jewell

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury swept William Jewell in a doubleheader, winning game one 9-1 in five innings and game two 6-1 on Sunday at Thompson Field in Springfield.

The Panthers, who have won 15 of their last 18 games, raised their record to 27-20 and 15-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Cardinals dropped to 23-29 and 6-18 in the GLVC.

Drury scored six runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the fifth inning to end game one early as the Panthers won 9-1 in a run-rule shortened contest. Drury got a two-RBI single by Brooklyn LaChappa to give the Panthers a 7-1 lead, then Sophie Luetticke ended the game, driving in two more runs with a double.

Taylor Hartsell went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for the Panthers. Kaley Adzick (9-3) went four innings and struck out seven batters to get the win, and Bailee Nixon earned her third save. Avrey Reynolds (11-14) took the loss for William Jewell.

Drury completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in game two. Victoria Garland belted a two-run home run in the second inning, her sixth of the year, to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Drury added a run in the fifth, then put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth.

Lauren Beier belted her 10th home run of the season with a solo shot to center field. Beier, honored as part of Senior Day, is Drury’s all-time lead in home runs, as the long-ball on Sunday was the 29th of her career. Drury also got an RBI-single from senior Gracie Thomas, and Garland scored on a wild pitch.

Kristina Bettis (5-6) added to her all-time program records as she got the win in relief. The senior from Swansea, Illinois, went five innings and allowed no runs, one hit, one walk and six strikeouts. Bettis owns the program record in wins with 44 and strikeouts with 543.

Drury returns to action next Saturday when they travel to Missouri-St. Louis for a doubleheader starting at noon.
