Drury sweeps Rockhurst in Saturday doubleheader

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Drury Panthers swept Rockhurst in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning game one 5-2 and game two by the same score in Kansas City, Missouri.
 
The Panthers improved to 26-15 and 21-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The two victories extended their winning to six games. Rockhurst fell to 23-17 and 14-13 in the GLVC.
 
Cade Waits lifted his record to 7-1 and he fired a complete-game in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The senior from Tulsa worked all seven innings and allowed seven hits, two earned runs and two walks with six strikeouts.
 
Luke Burk went 3 for 3 for Drury and had four RBIs. Burk drove in a run with a triple in the first inning, had an RBI single in the third, then sent two more runners home in the fifth with this third hit of the game.
 
Drury won the second game by the same 5-2 score and also started the game with a run in the first inning. Max Elmer scored on a wild pitch in the opening frame to get Drury on the board and reached base four games in the game with a single, a walk, and he was hit by a pitch twice. Elmer scored twice in the game and stole two bases.
 
Wes Laaker (5-4) got the win for Drury, going six innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs with four walks and five strikeouts. JD Whitter pitched the bottom of the seventh and retired all three batters he faced to pick up his first save.
 
Drury has won 10 of their last 11 games dating back to April 13 and moved into second place in the league standings. The Panthers trail first-place Indianapolis by one game going into Sunday’s contest.
 
The four-game series between Drury and Rockhurst concludes on Sunday with a 1 pm game in Kansas City, Missouri.
