Drury stays unbeaten in GLVC with win at Southwest Baptist

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury stayed perfect in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 5-2 win at Southwest Baptist on Saturday in Bolivar.
 
The Panthers went to 10-6 and 3-0 in the GLVC, while the Bearcats dropped to 6-13 and 2-1 in the conference.
 
Drury took the lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Drury’s 46^th ranked doubles team of Alma Abazi and Ewa Samberger won their ninth straight match with a 6-3 win over Paula Ballesteros and Elsa Pascual. Maria Fernanda de la Torres Ugarte Espejo and Antanina Novik clinched the point with a 6-3 win in the number two doubles position.
 
Drury’s top four singles players all picked up wins. Espejo improved to 11-2 this spring and rallied from a first set loss to win 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9). Alma Abazi also bounced back from an opening set loss to defeat Ghada Dirninger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In number one singles, Ewa Samberger picked up a win over Southwest Baptist’s Paula Ballesteros 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3. Leana Chanove also earned a win for Drury with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Elsa Pascual.
 
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they travel to Kirksville, Missouri, to take on Truman State at 2 pm.
