Panthers score two in the 9th to win at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Drury Panthers scored two runs in the top of the ninth and snared game one of a four-game series at Rockhurst, 3-2, on Friday night in Kansas City, Missouri. The win was Drury’s fourth straight and their eighth victory in nine games as they raised their record to 23-15 and 19-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks fell to 23-15 and 14-11 in the GLVC.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the ninth, Drury tied the game on a third-strike passed ball that scored pinch-runner Luke Matschiner from third base. Landon Willbrand’s infield single then scored Tyler Bastunas from third, and the Panthers took their first lead of the game.

Reliever Luc Fuller (1-1), in his second inning of relief, set the Hawks down in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win.

Bastunas and Willbrand both went 2 for 4 at the plate as each of Drury’s three runs were unearned. Panthers starter Cody Bahl got a no-decision but worked seven innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs with one walk and six strikeouts.

Drury’s win marked the fifth time this season they have won in their last at-bat and improved their record in one-run games to 6-3.

The two teams will resume their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon in Kansas City, Missouri.
