Panthers open GLVC schedule with win over Rockhurst

 
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury opened their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with a 4-3 win over Rockhurst on Friday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
 
The Panthers improved to 7-6 and 1-0 in the GLVC, while the Hawks dropped to 11-5 and 0-1 in the league.
 
Drury took a 1-0 lead, winning two of the three doubles matches. Maria Fernanda De la Torre Ugarte Espejo and Antanina Novik clinched the point with a 7-6 win over Ella Coleman and Zuzanna Szmyd.
 
The Panthers rallied in singles play to get the win as Alma Abazi, Leana Chanove, and Espejo all picked up wins. Chanove won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while Espejo squeaked out a first set win 7-6, then won her second set 6-4. Abazi won in three sets over Sofia Valdespino, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 for the win.
 
Drury is home again on Saturday when they host William Jewell at noon at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
