Panthers run win streak to 11; Adzick with a no-hitter in game one

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— Drury extended their winning streak to 11 games and added a 5-inning no-hitter in a doubleheader sweep of Illinois Springfield on Sunday in Springfield, Illinois. The Panthers won game one 10-0 in five innings, and starting pitcher Kaley Adzick registered a no-hitter in the win. Drury followed with a 5-0 shutout in game two.

The Panthers improved to 23-18 and 11-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Prairie Stars dropped to 23-17 and 7-7 in the league.

Adzick fired the fourth no-hitter in program history as the Panthers won 10-0 in five innings in game one. The sophomore from Ballwin, Missouri, and transfer from Webster University, walked two batters and struck out five to improve to 7-3.

Drury scored four runs in the second inning, added a run in the third, and took a 10-0 lead with five runs in the fourth inning.

All nine Panthers in the batting order had at least one hit, and seven different Drury players had at least one RBI. Victoria Garland hit a home run for the second day in a row, and Taylor Hartsell added her fourth homer of the season.

The 10-0 victory was Drury’s sixth win by run rule this season. Three of Drury’s four no-hitters in team history have come in the last three years, with Kristina Bettis firing one in 2022 and another in 2023.

AJ Agers and Bailee Nixon combined for a three-hit shutout, and the Panthers won the second game 5-0. Agers went two innings and allowed no runs on three hits, then Nixon (8-3) fired five innings and faced one batter over the minimum, surrendering no hits and no runs with no walks and one strikeout.

Drury got on the board with two runs in the first inning, scoring on a Lauren Beier sacrifice fly and then an RBI single by Taylor Hartsell. The Panthers added a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Victoria Garland hit her third home run of the weekend with a solo shot, and Beier went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

The start of the doubleheader was delayed for two hours by inclement weather.

The Panthers are idle until April 14 when they host Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader at Thompson Field at Meador Park.
