Tennis Bears Suffer First Home Loss of the Season

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season with a 4-1 drop against Drake on Saturday.

The Bears (10-8, 1-3 MVC) started out on top with Drake (7-9, 3-1 MVC) scratching the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.

Tuana Gunal was the only Bear to win a set at No. 3 singles. In her match against Drake’s Rebecca Ehn, Gunal took the first set 6-2. In the second set, Ehn had a 5-0 advantage. Gunal battled back to win four points in a row. She was one point short of tying the set when the match was called.

Nicole Ross was also in the lead when the match was called. Due to high winds on the outdoor courts at Cooper Tennis Complex, the match had to be moved to the indoor courts. Only four courts were available on short notice, so the No. 5 match did not begin until a court was available. Ross and Drake’s Nicole Lee could only finish the first point of the first set which Ross won.

MoState will conclude its home schedule next weekend with matches against UIC on Saturday and Valparaiso on Sunday. Both matches will be played at 10:00 a.m. at Cooper Tennis Complex. Admission is free.
