Eight Swim Bears Make CSC Academic All-District Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Missouri State swimming & diving had eight swimmers named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced Tuesday morning.

Kelly Sego, Jordan Wenner, Lana Janson and Samantha Roemer represent the Bears on the women’s All-District team while Nicholas Schuster, Jack Grandy, Alex Boutin and Lucas Chadwell received the four nods for the men’s team.

Student-athletes are eligible for the CSC All-District team by being at least a sophomore both academically and athletically and having at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Swimmers and divers must have competed in four team competitions or finish in the top eight of an event at a conference meet.

Four of the eight Bears selected this year (Sego, Wenner, Roemer and Schuster) were among the eight named to the All-District Team last year. The four women picked to this year’s All-District Team each made the All-MVC First Team this past season.

Sego (Sr., Batavia, Ill.) makes her second straight appearance on the All-District Team as she was the leadoff swimmer for the Bears in the conference-record-breaking swim in the 400-yard medley relay (3:37.10) at the MVC Championships in February. She also earned bronze in the 100-yard backstroke (55.32), eighth in the 200 IM (2:03.41) and seventh in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.25). Sego is majoring in financial planning.

Wenner (Fifth-year, Ashburn, Va.) also makes her second consecutive All-District Team following a stellar six-medal performance at the MVC Championships, including three gold medals in the 200-yard medley relay (1:39.40), the 400 medley relay (3:37.10) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.87). The latter two were also MVC records. Wenner also earned two silvers in the 50-yard freestyle (22.84) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.41). The fifth-year swimmer rounded out her career with a bronze in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.50) to bring her career conference medal total to 15. Wenner completed her undergraduate degree in elementary education last spring and is working on her master’s in special education.

Janson (So., Cape Town, South Africa) makes her first appearance on the All-District Team in her first season as a Bear. She won five MVC medals with two record-setting wins as the leadoff in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:12.19) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.87). Janson also had two silver medals in the 200 IM (2:01.67) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.74). She was also the leadoff swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle relay alongside Wenner to get bronze (1:31.50). Janson is majoring in Physics.

Roemer (Sr., Bettendorf, Iowa) also makes the All-District Team in back-to-back years thanks to her two golds and one silver at the MVC Championships. She won gold in the 200-yard medley relay (1:39.40) and 400-yard medley relay with a record-setting time of 3:37.10 as the third swimmer in each event. She also won an individual silver medal in the 100-yard butterfly (54.02). Roemer is majoring in health services.

The men’s team also had four student-athletes make the CSC All-District Team with many strong finishes at the MAC Championships last month in Carbondale, Ill.

Schuster (Sr., Muskego, Wis.) is the lone Bear on the men’s team to make the All-District Team a second time. He finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.73) to become eligible. Schuster also finished ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.64), winning the B Final. Schuster is majoring in nursing

Grandy (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) is the only Bear to make the All-District Team and also be named to the All-MAC First Team. He earned one bronze as the leadoff swimmer in the 800-yard freestyle (6:29.41). His leadoff split of 1:35.36 was a Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium pool record for a 200-yard freestyle and was the conference best this season. Grandy also finished in the top six in three other events, earning sixth in the 200 IM (1:47.36), fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.13) and sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:59.53). He is majoring in biomedical sciences.
