24th ranked Pittsburg State gets past Panthers in 11 innings

PITTSBURG, Kan.— 24th ranked Pittsburg State held off Drury scoring threats and drove in a run in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 4-3 win in extra innings on Tuesday in Pittsburg, Kansas.
 
The Gorillas improved to 23-11. The Panthers, who had won seven of their eight games, dropped to 14-13.
 
Drury took a 2-0 lead in the third, scoring a run on a Pittsburg State error and an RBI single by Luke Burk. The Gorillas scored a run in the fourth and tied the game with another run in the fifth.
 
Pittsburg State took a 3-2 lead with a run in the seventh, but the Panthers drew even on a hit by Kellen Williamson that drove in Burk from third base.
 
Drury stranded two runners in the ninth and two more in the 10th. The Gorillas loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the 10th, but the Panthers got out of the jam with a strikeout, a force out at home plate, and a ground ball to the pitcher.
 
After the Panthers were retired in order in the 11th, Pittsburg State won the game with a double by Nixon Brannon that drove home Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo.
 
Christian Spitz (1-0) got the win in relief for the Gorillas, who used 10 pitchers in the game. Drury threw nine different pitchers and JD Whitter (0-2) took the loss. Foo was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Gorillas.
 
Max Elmer was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored for Drury. 
 
The game marked the third time the Panthers have played extra innings this year and dropped them to 2-1 in those games.
 
Drury plays again on Friday when they open a four-game series at McKendree with a 3 pm game in Lebanon, Illinois.
