Panthers sweep Truman State to extend winning streak

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Drury Panthers swept a doubleheader from Truman State and extended their winning streak to seven games as they beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in the first game, and 1-0 in game two on Saturday at Thompson Field in Springfield.

Drury improved to 19-18 and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and dropped the Bulldogs to 14-18 and 6-4 in the GLVC.

The Panthers scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning of game one to break a scoreless tie. Rylee Kolb scored from third base on a wild pitch to put Drury in front, then an error at third base resulted in two more runs crossing the plate to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.

Kaley Adzick (5-3) got the win for Drury as she pitched four innings and allowed only one hit and no runs with one walk and one strikeout. Bailee Nixon picked up her first save as she worked the final three innings and gave up one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Truman State scored their only run of the game in the top of the fifth on a single to right field by Cassie Smith that drove in one run, but the Panthers prevented another run from scoring on the play as Rylee Kolb’s throw from right led to a tag out at home plate.

Drury scored a run in the first inning of game two and held off the Bulldogs for a 1-0 win.

Kolb led off the first inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, reached third on a fly ball to right field, then scored on a single by Lauren Beier.

AJ Agers (4-4) kept the Bulldogs off the board to get the win. Agers earned the complete-game shutout and held Truman State to just three hits.

The Bulldogs put the tying run at third in the seventh, though, as a two-out walk gave Truman State a baserunner. Pinch-runner Lily Arnt stole second base and third on an infield single. With runners at the corners, Agers ended the game, getting a ground ball to second base to end the Bulldogs threat.

The game marked Drury’s sixth shutout win of the year.

The Panthers are on the road next weekend as they travel to Quincy for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon in Quincy, Illinois.
