Wrestling Gets Three In The Top Six Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of Missouri wrestling completed session V of the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championship on Saturday, March 23, at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, tied for 11th place with 49.5 team points. Final team results will be available following the final matches in Session VI. 

Junior Keegan O’Toole won both consolation matchups to take third place at 165 pounds. Redshirt senior Zach Elam capped his career with his best NCAA finish, claiming fourth in the 285-pound bracket, and junior Rocky Elam finished in sixth place at 197 pounds.

SESSION V

O’Toole opened the final day with a technical fall of 20th seed Hunter Garvin from Stanford. Z. Elam followed that up with a strong decision win over fourth-seeded Cohlton Schultz out of Arizona State, racking up four minutes of riding time. The wins sent both wrestlers to the third-place matches of their respective weight classes.

R. Elam dropped decisions against fifth-seeded Jacob Cardenas of Cornell and third-seeded Tanner Sloan, taking sixth place. 

O’Toole took home third with a 12-8 decision win over No. 6-seed Mike Caliendo from Iowa, marking the junior’s fourth top-three finish at the national tournament.

NOTES

  • O’Toole joins Ben Askren (2004-07) as the only wrestlers in program history to finish in the top three in four consecutive NCAA championship appearances.
  • O’Toole and R. Elam became the fourth and fifth wrestlers in program history to have four top-six finishes, joining Ben AskrenJ’den Cox and Daniel Lewis.
  • Z. Elam’s fourth-place finish marks the highest of his career.
  • Z. Elam defeated Cohlton Schultz for the first time in three tries with a season-high four minutes of riding time.
  • Additionally, the redshirt senior’s fourth-place finish is the best by a Mizzou heavyweight since Dom Bradley’s fourth-place finish in 2013.
