Wrestling Finishes Day Two Of NCAA Championship With Three All-Americans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of Missouri wrestling wrapped up the second day of the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championship on Friday, March 22, at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, in 13th place with 40 team points. Three Tigers, juniors Keegan O’Toole and Rocky Elam ??and redshirt senior Zach Elam, clinched All-American honors. 

SESSION III

O’Toole and R. Elam each clinched All-American status with their return to the semifinals at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively. 

O’Toole pinned the No. 8 seed Antrell Taylor of Nebraska in 4:06 to advance to the semifinals. Later, R. Elam secured his second consecutive trip to the semifinals with an 8-2 decision win over No. 4-seed Michael Beard.

Z. Elam entered the 285 consolation bracket after dropping a decision to No. 3 seed Wyatt Hendrickson in the quarterfinals. In the consolations, both redshirt sophomore Josh Edmond and classmate Colton Hawks went 2-0, starting with strong decision victories, as it was Edmond over 22nd-seeded CJ Composto at 141 pounds and Hawks over No. 28-seed Caleb Hopkins at 184.

Edmond continued his run, claiming a 15-6 major decision over 20 seed Tom Crook, while Hawks also earned his spot in the blood round by defeating No. 29-seed Jha’Quan Anderson in sudden victory.

SESSION IV

After O’Toole and R. Elam locked up All-American status in the earlier session, Z. Elam joined them with his blood-round victory over No. 26-seed Hunter Catka.

The Tigers heavyweight later advanced to the consolation semifinals with a decision win over No. 13-seed Yaraslau Slavikouski of Rutgers.

O’Toole and R. Elam both entered the consolation brackets. O’Toole lost a decision to fourth-seeded David Carr of Iowa State, and R. Elam lost against top-seeded Aaron Brooks.

NOTES

  • O’Toole became the third wrestler in program history to pin each of his first three opponents in the championship bracket, joining Ben Askren (2007) and Daniel Lewis (2019) as the only Tigers to accomplish the feat.
  • Additionally, O’Toole becomes one of four Tigers to have at least three wins by fall, joining Askren, Lewis and Matt Pell. Pell secured four falls in 2007 at 165 pounds. 
  • O’Toole and R. Elam became the first Tigers to reach the semifinals in tandem in two straight years since Lewis and Jaydin Eierman in the 2018 and 2019 championships.
  • Kansas City, Missouri products and brothers Zach and Rocky Elam became the only set of nine brothers at the tournament to both All-American.
  • Edmond avenged an earlier decision loss this season to Tom Crook of Virginia Tech on Jan. 2 by winning a 15-6 major decision in the consolation third round.
  • Missouri was one of nine schools to have multiple semifinalists in O’Toole and R. Elam. 
  • O’Toole and Elam became the fourth and fifth Mizzou wrestlers to become four-time All-Americans. 
  • Z. Elam earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year.
  • MU has three All-American wrestlers for the second straight season and the seventh time in the last eight years.
  • With two wins on Friday, Z. Elam passed assistant coach Dom Bradley as the winningest heavyweight in program history. The redshirt senior now has 106 wins and is tied for 19th all-time with John Kopinsky and Jeremy Spates.  

UP NEXT

Sessions V and VI of the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championship will take place in Kansas City at T-Mobile Center on March 23. The medal round will take place in session V, beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Session VI will begin at 6 p.m. CT and consist of the championship finals.
