Drury swim teams still in second after Thursday’s competition at NCAA-II Championships

GENEVA, Ohio— After the second full day of competition at the NCAA-II Swimming & Diving Championships, both of Drury’s teams remain in second place in the overall standings at the SPIRE Institute Aquatic Center in Geneva, Ohio.
 
The Drury women’s team has 227.5 points and is behind Nova Southeastern’s total of 278. Colorado Mesa is in third with 211.5 points.
 
The DU men’s squad has 209 points and trails first place Tampa by 48 points. Indianapolis is in third with 188.
 
Women’s Highlights

  • Drury had three place in the top 10 of the 400 Individual Medley. Maria Munoz came in fourth with a time of 4:16.96, while Claire Conover was fifth (4:17.38). Aurora Duncan won the consolation race and finished ninth with a time of 4:18.80
  • Josie Bushell was fourth in the 200 Free, posting a time of 1:48.14
  • Mellie Wijk, this year’s Swimmer of the Year in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, came in fifth in the 100 Butterfly (53.92)
  • The Panthers finished the night with a third place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Drury posted a time of 3:39.01, and was out-touched at the wall for second by Nova Southeastern (3:38.98). The Panthers closed the gap on a big early lead by Colorado Mesa, who won the event with a time of 3:38.52. Lexi Waller, Conover, Wijk, and Ashlyn Moore swam the relay for the Panthers

 
Men’s Highlights

  • Drury’s 400 Medley Relay team finished second in a thriller that saw the Panthers and McKendree Bearcats post NCAA-II record times. McKendree owns the Division II record after their time of 3:07.11, while Drury’s time of 3:07.31 was also faster than the previous record, set by Queens (NC) seven years ago. Drury’s Viktor Khnykin, Davi Mourao, Alejandro Villarejo, and Yuri Cabral teamed up for the national runner-up finish
  • Alejandro Villarejo finished fourth in the 100 Fly with a time of 46.37
  • Joao Nogueira was also fourth in the 400 Individual Medley (3:47.95)
  • Yuri Cabral had Drury’s best finish in the 200 Free as he finished 10th with a time of 1:36.41

 
The NCAA-II Championships continue on Friday with the preliminary heats of the 500 Free at 9 am (Central) in Geneva, Ohio.
