Tennis Bears Beat Lions, 4-1

HAMMOND, La. – The Missouri State women’s tennis team recorded a 4-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana on the road on Tuesday.
 
The Bears (8-5) won the double point to open play with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Missouri State remains undefeated, 6-0, when it wins the first point of the match.
 
Cristina Flaquer and Nicole Ross snapped a four-match losing streak in doubles to secure the point for MoState. The duo defeated Bente Bierma and Leana Gomez from Southeastern, 6-4. Tuana Gunal and Juliette Robinson improved to 7-4 in doubles this spring with a 6-3 win over the Lions’ Bogi Csordas and Panatchako Suanarsa.
 
Flaquer also secured the final singles point for the Bears with a win at No.1 over Gomez. The senior from Spain dropped the first set 6-3 to SELU before forcing the match to a third set with a 6-3 win in set two. Flaquer blazed through the third set to win 6-0 and clinch the match for the Bears. This is the second match this season where Flaquer has forced a third set. She is now 2-0 in third sets.
 
Robinson gave the Bears the lead they needed with a win at No. 4. The native of Carey Gulley, Australia defeated SELU’s Claudia Di Leonardo 6-2 in the first set and 6-4 in the second.
 
Gunal’s win at No. 3 put the Bears in position to clinch the win. Gunal battled Bierma in the first set and came out on top, winning 6-4. In the second set, the freshman flew to the win with a 6-1 finish.
 
With eight wins this season, head coach Ellie Burger has surpassed last season’s win total.
 
The Bears will finish their road trip with a match at New Orleans on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
