C.Y. Young Inducted into A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame

Missouri associate head coach Charlton “C.Y.” Young was honored as one of the nation’s top assistants this week, earning induction into the A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame.

Young was one of six honorees to be inducted in Charlotte, joining Jan Jensen (Iowa), Dean Lockwood (Michigan State), Kate Paye (Stanford), Norm Roberts (Kansas) and Jim Rosborough (Arizona). Voting for the Hall of Fame is based on the candidates’ record of success, significant contributions to the game, as well as high character, integrity and respect among their colleagues.

In his first season on the Tigers’ sideline with Whitten Family Men’s Basketball head coach Dennis Gates, Young had an immediate impact on the Tigers’ success in 2022-23. The associate head coach helped Mizzou to 25 victories – its most in 11 seasons – while claiming its first NCAA Tournament win in 13 years and advancing to the SEC Tournament Semifinals for the first time in school history.

A veteran with nearly 30 years of coaching experience, Young most recently served as a member of Leonard Hamilton’s Florida State staff for nine seasons. Throughout his accomplished career, he has been a part of eight NCAA Tournaments, two regular-season conference titles and 13 NBA Draft picks. His work at Florida State directly played a part in three Sweet 16 appearances and the programs’ first Elite Eight in 25 years.

Young was also the head coach at his alma mater, Georgia Southern, from 2009-13 and made previous stops as an assistant at Georgia Tech, Chattanooga, Auburn, Northeastern and Jacksonville. He was named the No. 1 High-Major Division I Minority Assistant Coach by the Minority Coaches Association in 2021 and was a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award in 2012, which is awarded annually to the top minority head coach in Division I.
