Flyers pull away from Drury

OZARK, Mo.— Lewis grabbed a lead over Drury in the fifth inning and pulled away for a 9-4 victory on Sunday at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark. The win gave the Flyers a 3-1 series win over the Panthers.

Drury fell to 27-19 and 17-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lewis went to 23-17 and 15-9 in the GLVC.

The Panthers took an early lead with a run in the first inning, and they went up 2-1 in the second inning on an RBI single by Brooks Sunny. The Flyers would get a two-out, two-RBI triple from Tony Fleischauer an inning later to seize a 3-2 lead, but Drury responded and tied the game in the fourth on a bunt by Luke Burk that scored Tyler Bastunas.

The Flyers pushed home two runs in the fifth inning, though, and never fell behind again. Lewis reliever Matt Piento (2-2) pitched 4.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed only one hit and one unearned run with three walks and three strikeouts to get the win.

Lewis scored seven of the nine runs with two outs and banged out 16 hits, including five for extra bases.

Bastunas went 3 for 5 for Drury with two runs and Sunny also had three runs and an RBI for the Panthers. Drury stranded 13 runners in the loss.

The Panthers travel to Quincy for a four-game series next weekend. Game one of the series starts on Friday at 3 pm in Quincy, Illinois.
