Panthers win seventh straight with win over Lewis

OZARK, Mo.— The Drury Panthers won their seventh straight game with a 12-1 win in seven innings against Lewis at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark on Friday.

The Panthers went to 27-16 and 17-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers dropped to 20-17 and 12-9 in the GLVC.

Lewis took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but Drury responded with six runs in the bottom half of the innings. The Panthers took advantage of two Flyers errors in the frame, along with two walks and two hit batters as they sent 12 hitters to the plate.

“It was good to get to the pen in game one of the series,” said Drury head coach Scott Nasby as his team knocked out Lewis’ starter after one inning. “We took advantage of their mistakes and walks. I thought we could have swung it a little bit better, but we put some big innings together in the first and the sixth and then we got a really good outing from Cody.”

Drury starter Cody Bahl (6-1) took control and picked up the win as he did not allow a run through the next six innings and finished the game going seven innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Panthers put the game away with three runs in the sixth. Tyler Bastunas drove in a run with a single, then Brooks Sunny’s two-RBI hit gave Drury a 12-1 lead.

Sunny ended the game going 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI’s, while Bastunas went 2 for 3 with three runs, two runs batted in and two steals.

Shane Gorman (2-5) took the loss for Lewis.

Drury’s Kellen Williamson extended his hitting streak to 10 games and Conner Bain reached base in his 21st straight game.

The two teams continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark.
