Marc Sonnen named men’s basketball assistant coach

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury men’s basketball head coach Chris Foster has named Marc Sonnen as his new assistant coach. Sonnen replaces Ben Fisher, who stepped down after six seasons as a Panthers assistant to pursue business opportunities.

Sonnen joins the Drury coaching staff after serving as an assistant at Minnesota Duluth and was on the staff at Northern Iowa for three years, where he also spent his collegiate career.

“We are excited to add Marc to our coaching staff,” said Foster, who completed his second year as the Panthers head coach in 2022-23. “He is a proven winner as both a player and now as a coach. His knowledge of the game and work ethic will help develop our players and prepare them to be successful both on and off the court. He has an infectious energy that Panther fans will love. Marc also has strong recruiting ties in the Midwest that will help us continue to bring quality student-athletes to our basketball program.”

Sonnen was an assistant coach at Minnesota Duluth and helped the Bulldogs win the NCAA-II Central Regional championship and advance to the Elite Eight in 2022-23. Minnesota Duluth finished the year 26-10.

Before his move to Minnesota Duluth, Sonnen spent one season as the Videor Coordinator at Northern Iowa. Working for head coach Ben Jacobson, he set up video services for the program’s coaches and players, provided scouting services, scouted opponents, and conducted on-court workouts. He was also a graduate assistant at UNI from 2019-21.

Sonnen spent his collegiate playing career at Northern Iowa and set the program’s all-time record for career games played with 139. He started in all 36 games in his senior year during the 2012-13 season and finished that year ranked seventh in the nation in three-point shooting hitting 44.7 percent from behind the arc. His 96 three-pointers that year set a program record at Northern Iowa and was the sixth-most in Missouri Valley Conference history. As a freshman, Sonnen was part of a team that won the MVC championship and reached the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers went 99-48 during his four years at Northern Iowa.

Following his career at Northern Iowa, Sonnen played professionally in Germany, was a coach and instructor at the Minnesota School of Basketball, and was an assistant at Tartan High School in Oakdale, Minnesota.

He graduated from Northern Iowa with a degree in Sociology, and he has a Master’s degree in Community Health & Recreation also from Northern Iowa.
