Panthers split doubleheader with UMSL

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury split a doubleheader with Missouri-St. Louis as they won game one 3-0 but lost game two 5-1 at Thompson Field in Springfield on Sunday.
 
The Panthers ended the day 21-21 and 9-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Tritons went to 26-16 and 12-6.
 
Kristina Bettis struck out season-high 14 batters and fired a two-hit shutout for Drury in game one. Bettis got the win to go to 12-10 and, despite giving up just two hits, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and got out of a sixth inning when UMSL had runners at second and third with one out.
 
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when the Panthers scored three times. Taylor Hartsell reached second base on a dropped fly ball, then scored from second on a fly to left and throwing error. Sydney Sneed belted a two-run home run later in the inning to give Drury a three-run cushion.
 
Ashley Borowitz (8-6) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
 
Missouri-St. Louis broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth and pulled away for a 5-1 victory in game two. The Panthers tied the game at 1-1 in the third on an RBI double by Rylee Kolb, but UMSL retook the lead in the fifth as Irene Travis singled with two out to drive in the go-ahead run.
 
The Tritons added a run in the sixth, then Travis hit a two-run homer to center field to give her team a four-run lead.
 
Jenna Towle (10-3) got the win for UMSL going seven innings, allowing five hits and one run with no walks and four strikeouts. Karsyn Smith (2-2) took the loss for Drury.
 
Drury plays again on Saturday when they travel to sixth-ranked Indianapolis for a doubleheader starting at 11 am (Central) in Indianapolis, Ind.
