Panthers open homestand with 9-2 win over Truman State

OZARK, Mo.— Drury returned home and opened their four-game series against Truman State with a 9-2 win on Friday at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark.

The Panthers improved to 22-16 and 13-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Bulldogs fell to 14-20 and 4-13 in the GLVC.

Drury took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Luke Burk scored from second base when he stole third and came home on a throwing error. A sacrifice bunt by Conner Bain gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead as he drove in Kellen Williamson.

The Panthers added to the lead producing a run in the second and third, scoring both times when the frame started with two outs and no one on base. Brooks Sunny picked up an RBI single in the second, and an error at third scored Bain from second base in the third.

Drury starter Cody Bahl allowed 13 hits through eight innings, but only surrendered one extra-base hit and carried a shutout into the eighth. Bahl improved to 5-1 as he walked two and struck out six.

“We held them to singles most of the game,” said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. “Our guys were getting on the bags and moving around. We executed some things that we haven’t done recently and that allowed us to score some runs and build a lead.”

The Panthers belted six doubles, two of them by Tyler Bastunas, who went 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Carson Shaver also went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Zachary Schneider (4-4) took the loss for Truman State.

Saturday’s doubleheader against the Bulldogs will move to an 11 am start with the threat of thunderstorms forecast for late in the afternoon.
