Indianapolis takes first game of four-game series from Panthers

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Indianapolis built an early lead and held off two bases-loaded opportunities against Drury for a 9-1 win over the Panthers on Thursday in Indianapolis, Indiana.
 
The loss snapped Drury’s five-game conference winning streak and dropped them to 20-14 and 11-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Greyhounds went to 15-11 and 3-10 in the GLVC.
 
Indianapolis scored a run in the third, then added three more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Panthers mounted a threat in the top of the six as they loaded the bases with one out. Luc Fuller drew a walk to drive in a run, but Drury hit a pop-up to second base and a flyball to right field to end the inning. The Greyhounds scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead, but the Panthers loaded the bases again in the seventh, this time with no outs. UIndy got a pop-up and double-play to get out of the inning and closed out the game with a 9-1 win.
 
Seth Spencer (3-2) got the win as he went seven innings, allowing only three hits and one unearned run with five walks and six strikeouts. Cody Bahl (4-1) took his first loss of the year despite recording eight strikeouts in five innings.
 
Wes Collins went 2 for 4 at the plate for Drury. Indianapolis outfielder Brandon DeWitt went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI’s, and a walk.
 
Thursday’s game was the first game in a four-game series that resumes on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 11 am (Central) at Indianapolis.
