Drury Women’s Golf finishes sixth at Newman Invitational

WICHITA, Kan. – The Drury Panthers placed sixth out of fifteen teams at the Newman Invitational on Monday. 
 
The Panthers fired a first-round team score of 306, which was good enough for an early tie for sixth. Abby Howard and Grace Stafford both shot opening rounds of 76, which were the best rounds early on the day for Drury. With 18 more holes to go, the Panthers looked to make a move.
 
In round two, the Panthers were able to fire a team score of 302, securing sole possession of sixth place. Round two also saw Shehna Akbary fire the low round of the day for Drury, an even-par 72. The solid second round from Akbary launched her into a tie for 18th, which was the highest individual position for the Panthers.
 
The competition was many and certainly fierce at the Newman Invitational, with a handful of players turning in under par rounds during the 36-hole event. Henderson State shot a blazing team score of 550 and won the tournament, while Augustana (581) came in second. Oklahoma Baptist shot a team score of 583, rounding out the top three finishers.
 
Ellen Loving of Rogers State took home the individual title, firing incredible rounds of 65 and 67.
 
The Panthers team score also included Abby Howard (151), who finished tied for 24th, while Carmen Fletcher (155) and Grace Stafford (155), both tied for 34th. Isabelle Thrall finished tied for 41st with a total score of 158. In the individual portion of the tournament, Jacie Pattengill (158) finished T41st, and Ellie Holloway (167) finished T67th.
 
The Panthers travel to Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis on Sunday to start the UMSL Spring Invitational.
