Drury completes series sweep of Winona State with win on Sunday

OZARK, Mo.— The Drury Panthers completed a four-game sweep of Winona State on Sunday with a 10-2 win over the Warriors at US Baseball Park in Ozark.

Drury raised their record to 9-2 and dropped Winona State to 0-4.

For the fourth straight, Drury scored a run in the first inning as Cooper Munro gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with a ground ball that scored Brooks Sunny.

After Winona State tied the game in the top of the second, Drury claimed the lead back with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Luke Burk drove in a run with a single, then Sunny added a hit that produced another run. A bases-loaded, two-out error let three runs score and the Panthers took command with a 6-1 lead.

Sunny went 2 for 3 in the game with two runs and an RBI. Tyler Bastunas went 3 for 4 with two runs, and Carson Shaver went 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs, and two RBIs. Luc Fuller, in a DH role, was 2 for 3 and scored three times.

Wes Laaker (1-0) got the win in relief for Drury throwing three shutout innings. Six Drury pitchers combined to hold the Warriors to five hits.

“It was good to get production from the bottom half of the order and especially from guys like Fuller, who needed to get some at-bats,” said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. “We also got a big hit from Shaver (hitting in the ninth spot), and now we just need to keep that rolling through a really tough two-week stretch in our schedule.”

The Panthers return to the field to start a four-game series at Maryville on Friday at 2 pm.
