Drury Baseball starts season with two wins over Christian Brothers

Memphis, Tenn.— The Drury Panthers opened the 2023 season by defeating Christian Brothers in both games of their Saturday doubleheader.

Drury won the opening game in an 11-6 slugfest. The Panthers offense started with a 2-run shot by Wes Collins in the first inning. Brooks Sunny would keep the scoring alive with a homer in the third inning to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Carson Shaver joined the homerun club with a three-run shot of his own in the 5th inning to expand Drury’s lead. The crushing blow came when Brooks Sunny launched his second homer of the game, a three-run shot, to put the Panthers up 11-6.

Cody Bahl (1-0) got the win going five innings, allowing only one run on two hits, and five strikeouts. Luke Burk and Cooper Munro also had RBI’s in the game for the Panthers.

Drury took game two of the doubleheader with a final score of 12-4. It was once again Brooks Sunny homering in the first inning to drive in Max Elmer. The Panthers added another run in the second with a Luke Burk sac bunt, scoring Cooper Munro. Burk added two more runs for the Panthers in the fourth, launching a homerun to right field to increase the Drury lead. The Panthers exploded in the seventh inning, scoring 4 runs and increasing their lead to 12-4.

Cade Waits (1-0) got the win throwing five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Luke Burk finished with 4 RBI’s and Brooks Sunny finished with 3 RBI’s and 3 hits.

The Panthers open the year 2-0 and will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 12 pm.
