SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Drury women’s tennis team is picked to finish tied for first in the West Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll.
The Panthers received 23 points, three votes for first place, and are tied with Southwest Baptist in the poll. Rockhurst was picked for third in the West.
Indianapolis is picked to win the East Division, while Illinois Springfield and Lewis are tied to finish second in the East.
The Panthers return five letter winners from a team that went 16-4 last year and 5-1 in the GLVC. GLVC Freshman of the Year, Ewa Samberger, along with fellow First Team All-GLVC selections Nastasia Jedrychowski and unanimous pick Alma Abaz return for a Panthers team that received votes in the ITA preseason poll. Head coach Jarrod Smith will enter his 18th year as head coach of the women’s program and owns a career record of 194-46 with the women’s squad.
Drury opens the season on Friday against Missouri State at the Cooper Tennis Complex. They then host William Woods on Saturday.
