Men’s Hockey Drops First Game to St. Louis University

The Drury University men’s hockey team debuted in front of a sellout crowd at the Jordan Valley Ice Park with a three-game opening weekend, two games at St. Louis University followed by a Sunday matinee against Mizzou.

The Billikens opened the contest with back-to-back power play goals early in the first period.  Drury was able to stabilize their penalty killing efforts in a period that saw the Panthers shorthanded five times. Freshman goaltender Josh Robins backstopped the opening period effort with 11 saves.

SLU added an even-strength goal 3:15 into the second period before the Panthers answered just over two minutes later during a 4-on-4 opportunity from a shot by Xavier Abel with the assist to Neil Cerrato and Josh Robins.  Abel took the puck end to end, split through the SLU defensemen, and shot the puck in the top corner to score the historic first goal for the Panthers.

Despite puck possession time, the Panthers were unable to close the gap throughout the final 20 minutes, dropping their first game in program history, 3-1. Shots were even at 31 for DU and SLU on the night. SLU went 2 for 8 on the power play while Drury went 0 for 10 with the extra skater.
