SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– It was a heartbreaking way to lose. Drury built an early lead in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener against Ouachita Baptist and the Tigers needed to get a pin in the final match-up of the dual to get a victory…and they pulled it off, edging Drury 25-24 at Weiser Gym on Wednesday.

Drury built a 20-0 lead after the first four matches. Caden Howard opened the dual with a win by Fall in 4:48 at 125 pounds, then Brandon Borlinghaus defeated James Anderson 10-4 at 133 pounds.

Peter Kuster, ranked third in the nation at 141 pounds, pinned Cole McCartney in 1:38, then Lebanon product Trevor Christian won by Techincal Fall, 18-0, in 2:39 to give Drury a 20-0 advantage.

Ouachita Baptist won the 157-pound match, but the Panthers rebounded as Will Kuster earned a Major Decision win over Marcel Molu 15-2 in the 165 division. That would be Drury’s last win of the night as the Tigers got a win by Fall in the 174-pound class, then picked up a last-second win at 184 pounds as Will Martin would get two points in the closing seconds to defeat Logan Zimmermann 8-7.

OBU got a Major Decision victory at 197 pounds from 10th ranked Brooks Schrismsher to set the Heavyweight finale and Johnny Green, ranked number four in the nation, delivered the pin the Tigers needed to win by one as he earned a win by Fall in 1:43 over Thomas Massengale.

“That’s a bitter-sweet finish to a dual,” said Drury head coach James Reynolds. “We had some really good victories and performed well in some of our matches and fell short in some others. Good news is that we have plenty of opportunities to capitalize on moving forward.”

Wednesday’s dual was originally scheduled to be at Ouachita Baptist but was shifted to Springfield and Weiser Gym due to facility issues at OBU.

The Panthers are home again and will honor their graduating wrestlers on Saturday as part of Senior Day. Drury hosts Quincy at 4 pm, then will take on Kentucky Wesleyan at 5 pm in the O’Reilly Family Event Center. Before the two Drury duals, Quincy will battle Wesleyan at 3 pm. Drury’s seniors will be honored between the Quincy and Kentucky Wesleyan dual.
