Drury men’s & women’s cross country set for GLVC Championships on Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Elsah, Illinois to compete in the 2022 GLVC Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The course is located directly across from the entrance of Principia College. McKendree will serve as the host school for the championships.

The men will lead off the day with an 8,000-meter run at 10:30 am. The women will follow with a 6,000-meter run at 11:30 am. This will be the first time that the women have run a 6,000-meter race this season.

The top 20 finishers in each race will be named All-GLVC and the winner of each race will be named GLVC Runners of the Year. The freshman that finishes the highest in each race will be named GLVC Freshman of the Year.

Last year, Lewis repeated as champions on the men’s side with 42 points, beating out Illinois-Springfield (53) by 11 points and Southern Indiana (54) by 12. Drury placed fourth, with William Kershaw leading the way in 19th place. Luke Bryne also earned All-GLVC honors finishing in 20th place.

On the women’s side, Southern Indiana took the crown. Their 44 points were more than enough to beat out second-place Lewis (80) and third-place Southwest Baptist (86). Drury came in fourth place with 113 points. Claire McCune, Elizabeth Stinson, and Katie McCune earned All-GLVC honors for the Panthers, finishing third, ninth, and 18th, respectively.

This year, sophomore Colby Garner leads the way for the men’s team, who is fourth all-time in Drury history in the 8,000-meter run with a time of 25:06 at Alabama-Huntsville two weeks ago. Sophomore William Kershaw is sixth all-time with a time of 25:16, which was also run at Alabama-Huntsville. Two freshmen, Gabe Bauer and Collin Emmert, also crack the all-time book with their times of 25:31 and 25:39, placing them 10th and 11th in school history. Another freshman, Ethan Haynes, who ran a 25:55 at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival, is racing out the top five times of the year.

5,000-meter school record holder Bradley Weimer leads the women’s squad. The sophomore from Springfield Central broke the mark, previously held by Claire McCune, at Alabama-Huntsville, with a time of 17:23. Also on the 5,000-meter all-time list are Elizabeth Stinson, Zoe van Dijk, Mia Harris, and Jayme-Sue Vermaas, at third, seventh, eighth and eleventh respectively. Stinson and Harris are on the 6,000-meter all-time list, whose times of 22:04 and 23:05 place them fifth and 13th in school history.

The GLVC does have teams that are ranked nationally in the most recent poll. On the men’s side, Illinois Springfield is ranked 17th nationally and third in the region whilst Lewis is receiving votes nationally and is seventh in the region. On the women’s side, Lewis is 19th nationally and third in the region. Southwest Baptist is the other team that is ranked regionally, coming in at ninth.

The event will be streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network.
