Sylvain Garin-Michaud reaches semifinals of ITA Midwest Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Drury men’s tennis player Sylvain Garin-Michaud reached the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional tournament going 4-1 in singles in the ‘A’ Flight bracket last weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana. His run to the semifinals highlighted the fall tournament for the Panthers in the annual fall individual tournament.
 
The junior from France was an All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection last year and started last weekend’s tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jordi Leston from McKendree. Garin-Michaud then defeated Alvaro Nunez from Southwest Baptist 6-2, 6-3, then took down Wayne State’s Daniel Grey 6-4, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Garin-Michaud advanced again, defeating Leonard Schmitz 7-6, 6-4. Ruben Fonga from Tiffin ended Garin-Michaud’s run in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
 
Drury’s Marlon Wilken, also an All-GLVC returner from last year, went 2-1 in the ‘A’ Flight with wins in the opening two rounds before falling to the tournament’s number two seed, Leonardo Schmitz Frederico from McKendree, in a tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.
 
Two of Drury’s doubles teams went 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals. Garin-Michaud and Yaroslav Sharyy won their first two matches before falling 8-5 to a duo from Ferris State, and Wilken and Tjade Bruns also won their first two rounds before dropping a 9-7 battle to the doubles team from Indianapolis.
 
The Drury women’s team will compete in the ITA Midwest Regional Sept. 24-26 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
