Former Panther Sterling Sharp signs minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Former Drury pitcher Sterling Sharp was signed to a minor league contract by the Boston Red Sox late last week and was assigned to the team’s Double-A affiliate in Portland, Maine.

Sharp has spent the 2022 season with the Washington Nationals Triple-A affiliate in Rochester. He had made 18 appearances with 13 starts going 2-5 with a 6.62 earned run average. Sharp logged 66.2 innings with 59 strikeouts for Rochester.

Sterling Sharp pitched for Drury in 2016 and was drafted in the 22nd round of that summer by Washington. Following the 2019 season, he was selected by Miami in the MLB Rule 5 Draft and made four major league appearances for the Marlins in 2020. Sharp was designated for assignment late in the 2020 season and was picked back up by the Nationals.

Sharp is one of three Drury players in the program’s modern-era history that began in 2007 that have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Will Landsheft (Arizona, 2014) and Nic Perkins (Washington, 2017) were Drury’s other two selections, and both logged professional time in the minor leagues.

Former Drury pitcher Trevor Richards signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Marlins in 2017, reached the majors a year later, and in the last five seasons, has spent time in the majors with the Marlins, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, and is currently with the Toronto Blue Jays. Richards has made 44 appearances for Toronto in 2022 and has a 3-1 record with 55 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. The Aviston, Illinois, native who graduated from Drury in 2015, has gone 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA since July 30 and the Blue Jays currently lead the wildcard race in the American League.
