Schweizer, Weir Qualify for World Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. – With silver finishes in their respective events, Karissa Schweizer and Jillian Weir will represent the University of Missouri track and field program at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in July.

On Sunday at the U.S. Championships, alumna Karissa Schweizer earned a silver finish in the 5,000m with a time of 15:49.32. With her season best and world standard of 15:02.77 (4/15/22), she will represent Team USA in both the 5K and the 10,000 meters. On May 27, Schweizer won the U.S. 10K title in a season-best time of 30:49.56, also meeting the world standard.

On Saturday night at the Canadian National Championships, volunteer assistant coach Jillian Weir earned her spot at the World Championships with a silver finish in the hammer throw. She tossed a personal best of 73.12m / 239-10, also surpassing the world championship standard (72.5m).

Earlier this week at the U.S. U20 Championships, rising redshirt freshman Ames Burton earned a spot on Team USA for the World U20 Championships. In her collegiate debut, she tossed a 54.08m / 177-5 in the discus – good for the No. 4 performance all-time at Mizzou.

The 2022 World Athletics Championships will be held July 15-24 at Oregon’s Hayward Field. The 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships will be held August 1-6 at Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Santiago de Cali, Colombia.
