36 DU student-athletes named Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholars

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury Athletics had 36 student-athletes named Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholars by the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
 
Named after Brother James Gaffney FSC, the former President of Lewis University for more than 27 years and two-term Chair of the GLVC Council of Presidents, the award is presented annually to student-athletes competing in GLVC-sponsored sports who achieve a 4.0-grade point average during the academic year.
 
Drury’s total of 36 Gaffney award winners is a department record and tops the previous high total of 35 set in 2019-20.  Last year, 32 student-athletes received the honor.
 
Eight Drury student-athletes are repeat Gaffney Distinguished Scholar recipients, including Isaac Ammann (baseball), Luke Wegenka (men’s cross country, track & field), Jeremy Coen (men’s soccer), Jacob Schmidt (men’s soccer), Graham Wells (men’s swimming & diving), Tucker Caswell (wrestling), Sydney Horton (women’s bowling), and Ashley McCullough (women’s soccer).
