FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Competing at the NCAA Championships, Rochelle Etienne and Jamilah James wrapped up the Missouri State track and field season, along with their collegiate careers, here Saturday evening.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity I had to coach both of these athletes for four years as well as for the impact they made on this program on and off the track,” said assistant track and field coach Jake Brydson.

Etienne kicked off the Bears’ participation in the championships on Thursday afternoon, competing in the javelin throw. The graduate student from Monchy Gros-islet, St. Lucia, qualified for the preliminaries at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships after a gold-medal performance recording a lifetime best. Competing in the championships’ west regional, Etienne finished in 47th place, throwing a distance of 39.99 meters.

“Rochelle’s storied career ended in Fayetteville, but her gold medal winning performance at our conference championship in the Javelin sparked our team’s performance for the entire weekend. I could not be more proud of how hard she attacked everything in her way and on a cold and windy day, she went for it,” continued Brydson.

Continuing MSU’s action on Saturday night was James, competing in the triple jump. After qualifying for the NCAAs with a season-best jump of 12.65 meters, the graduate student finished her collegiate career on Saturday night, recording a mark of 12.48 meters. The distance earned her a 32nd-place finish out of a competitive west regional field of 48.

“When it’s time to come through and the stakes are the highest, there is nobody in my time here at Missouri State that compares to Jamilah. Today was her final time to do that for us here at Missouri State, and in swirling winds with her back against the wall one more time, she did it,” finished Brydson. “I’m so proud of the way they both competed.”
