Weber, Laird Lead No. 24/22 Tigers Past No. 17/20 Auburn

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 24/22 University of Missouri softball (34-19) downed No. 17/20 Auburn (39-15), 1-0, to open SEC Tournament play. Jordan Weber tossed her third shutout of the season and Jenna Laird drove in the game’s only run on a double to left field to pace Missouri’s effort.

RECAP

Jordan Weber dazzled in the circle for Mizzou in the opening round of the SEC Tournament. After picking up a pair of strikeouts in the first, the junior ran into trouble in the second inning, walking each of the first two batters. With the bases loaded and one out, Alex Honnold made a running catch in right field and threw out a runner tagging from third at the plate to keep the game tied.

Missouri loaded the bases in the third with two outs after Laird walked, Wert was hit by a pitch and Honnold singled, but the Tigers were unable to break the tie.

Jenna Laird got Mizzou on the board in the fourth. With a runner on second and two outs, the sophomore laced a double to deep left field to bring home the first and only run of the game.

Weber stranded a runner in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings to maintain the lead for Missouri. In the sixth, she struck out back-to-back batters to close out the frame.

NOTES

Jordan Weber picked up her third shutout of the year while striking out eight batters.

Jenna Laird went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double and a stolen base.

Alex Honnold was 1-for-3 on the afternoon while providing a highlight-reel throw to the plate.

Four of Mizzou’s five SEC Tournament wins have been shutouts.

UP NEXT

The Tigers will face No. 5/7 Alabama for the fourth time in less than a week on Thursday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. CT in the second round of the SEC Tournament. Amanda Scarborough and Kevin Brown will have the call on SEC Network.
