Drury smacks five home runs in 14-10 win at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – Aaron Mann and DJ McNew both homered twice for Drury and Mann’s second bomb broke a 10-10 tie in the eighth inning as the Panthers opened a four-game series with a 14-10 win at William Jewell on Friday in Liberty, Missouri.

Drury won their fifth straight game and improved to 34-13 as well as 19-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. William Jewell dropped to 29-17 and 14-11 in the GLVC.

The game went back-and-forth in the middle innings as Drury fought back from a 7-4 deficit to take a 10-7 lead in the top of the seventh. The Cardinals scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to draw even at 10-10.

Mann started the eighth inning with a solo shot to left-center that put Drury back in front for good. The Panthers added three more runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

McNew went 3 for 6, homered twice, and drove in three runs. Mann was 2 for 5 with a pair of home runs for his seventh and eighth long-balls of the year and finished with two RBIs. Kaden Helsel went 3 for 4 with a home run and two runs scored.

Jack Jones (2-0) got the win in relief, having pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, while William Jewell reliever Drew Dant (4-4) took the loss.

Drury’s win spoiled William Jewell’s return to Talley Stadium. The Cardinals resurfaced the field and were playing their first game on the campus this year.

The Panthers also maintained their two-game lead in the GLVC’s Green Division as second-place Maryville won on Friday to keep pace with Drury. Three games remain in the regular season and two of them will be played on Saturday as the Panthers take on William Jewell in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm in Liberty.
