Panthers battle Quincy to doubleheader split on Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury battled Quincy to a doubleheader split on Saturday at Thompson Field as they won game one 5-1 but were shut out in game two 1-0.
 
The Panthers saw their record go to 33-14 and 19-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Quincy went to 16-27 and 10-16 in the league. 
 
Drury scored four runs in the first inning of game one on their way to a 5-1 win. Gracie Thomas put the Panthers on the board with a two-run single, then Megan Parsley drove in two more with a base-hit.
 
The Panthers added a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Rylee Kolb, who went 4 for 4 in the game.
 
Kristina Bettis earned her 21^st win of the season and went to 21-3 going seven innings allowing three hits, one unearned run with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
 
Game two was a scoreless duel until the seventh, when Quincy scored the game’s only run. Bailey Mitchell hit a one-out double to left field on a ball that took a bad hop allowing Mitchell to reach second. She then scored on Casey Brennan’s extra-base hit that dropped just inside the left field line.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers got a one-out single from Gena Kulberg, but the Hawks retired Drury on a fly to left and a pop-up to first base.
 
Karsyn Smith (6-5) took the loss for the Panthers despite going 6.1 innings allowing just five hits and one run with one walk and a strikeout. Bailee Highbarger (5-8) got the win firing a four-hit shutout, giving up two walks while striking out two.
 
Drury ends the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Illinois Springfield at noon at Thompson Field in Springfield.
