OZARK, Mo. – Drury opened a four-game series against Rockhurst with a doubleheader split against the Hawks on Saturday at US Baseball Park in Ozark. The Panthers won the first game 13-3 in seven innings, then fell in game two 15-6.
Drury ended the day 22-9 and 7-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Rockhurst went to 13-17 and 3-7 in the league.
In game one, the Panthers blew open a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fifth, then six runs in the sixth inning. Austin Fennewald gave Drury a three-run cushion in the fifth with a two-run double, then would score on a hit from Kaden Helsel.
Helsel ended the game going 2 for 3 with three RBI’s, a walk and a stolen base. Brant Schaffitzel was 3 for 3 with two runs, two RBI’s and a double.
Cody Bahl (6-2) got the win going five innings allowing five hits and three runs with five walks and three strikeouts. Roman Sherman (0-2) took the loss for the Hawks.
Rockhurst scored seven runs in the third inning of game two on their way to a 15-6 win in the second game. Drury grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from DJ McNew, but the Hawks responded with seven runs an inning later.
The Panthers pulled with three, 7-4, in the fourth, but Rockhurst pulled away with four runs in the fifth inning.
Helsel went 3 for 3 at the plate in game two to finish the day 5 for 6, and Schaffitzel went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI’s, and a walk in the second game.
The two teams continue their series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon at US Baseball Park.
