20th ranked Southern Indiana stays unbeaten in GLVC with two wins over Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – 20th ranked Southern Indiana handed Drury their first doubleheader sweep of the season, and the Screaming Eagles stayed undefeated in the Great Lakes Valley Conference two wins over the Panthers on Saturday at Thompson Field in Springfield. Southern Indiana won the first game in 10 innings, 2-1, then won the second game 2-0.
 
Drury fell to 26-11 and 12-4 in the GLVC, while USI went to 28-8 and 14-0 in the league.
 
In game one, Southern Indiana got a run in the top of the 10th to edge the Panthers 2-1. The Screaming Eagles loaded the bases in the 10th inning with one out, and Allie Goodin broke a 1-1 deadlock with an RBI-single.
 
Lexi Fair scored both runs for Southern Indiana as she hit a solo home run in the fourth inning that tied the game at 1-1. She reached base on a single in the 10th and set up the go-ahead run in the frame.
 
Kristina Bettis (16-2) lost for the first time since Feb. 6, and she had a personal 11-game winning streak snapped in the loss. She pitched all 10 innings allowing eight hits, two runs, and one earned run with two walks and eight strikeouts. Bettis surrendered her first home run of the season on Fair’s solo shot.
 
Drury scored the game’s first run as they went up 1-0 in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Sydney Sneed and Rylee Kolb.
 
Goodin (7-0) got the win for Southern Indiana and worked all 10 innings allowing six hits, one run, and three walks with four strikeouts.
 
The Panthers were shut out for the first time since March 4 in a 2-0 loss in the second game. Josie Newman (9-3) fired a one-hitter and survived, allowing seven walks as she struck out nine batters.
 
Drury stranded eight runners and had runners at first and second in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but Newman got a fly out to left field and a ground ball to third base to end the game.
 
Karsyn Smith (4-3) took the loss despite not giving up an earned run. Smith went all seven innings and gave up six hits, two unearned runs with no walks and five strikeouts.
 
The Panthers are back at home tomorrow when they host McKendree for a doubleheader starting at noon at Thompson Field.
