Panthers come alive in game two for split at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drury split a doubleheader with Maryville on Saturday as they were shut out for the first time this season in a 6-0 loss in game one but recovered to win game two game 7-2.
 
The Panthers moved their record to 20-7 and 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints went to 14-12 and 4-3 in the GLVC.
 
Maryville starting pitcher Jacob Kroeger (2-1) fired a one-hit shutout in the first game of the doubleheader in a 6-0 Saints win. Kroeger carried a no-hitter to the sixth inning when Kaden Helsel broke it up with a single to lead off the inning. Helsel was left stranded at third as Kroeger faced only three batters over the minimum, allowing one hit and two walks with 11 strikeouts.
 
Mason Meeks (3-1) took the loss for the Panthers.
 
Drury’s bats came alive in game two as they banged out 12 hits in a 7-2 win. The Panthers struck early with two runs in the opening frame, picking up RBI singles from Brant Schaffitzel and Tyler Bastunas.
 
Schaffitzel added a home run and two more RBIs and Helsel also went deep for his fourth homer of the year while going 2 for 3 at the plate. Drury went from having only one batter get a hit in game one to having all nine in their line-up picking up at least one hit in game two. Cade Waites (3-1) got the complete-game win going seven innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and two walks with nine strikeouts. Jamie Young (1-1) took the loss for the Saints.
 
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday at noon in St. Louis.
