Drury kicks off road trip at William Jewell
The Drury Panthers start a three-game road trip on Thursday at William Jewell. Tipoff is at 7:30 pm in Liberty, Missouri.
The Panthers are 4-7 and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Thursday’s game will be Drury’s second game since Dec. 18. The Panthers had three of their four scheduled games canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. Their lone contest was a Jan. 6 loss at Illinois Springfield, 80-76.
William Jewell is 7-6 and 3-2 in the GLVC. The Cardinals are coming off of an 81-77 win at home over Quincy on Saturday and have gone 2-1 since the holiday break. William Jewell is 6-1 on the home court this season, with their only loss at home coming against Maryville last week.
Drury and William Jewell were scheduled to play on Jan. 2, but the game was canceled by COVID-19 issues on the Panthers roster. Drury leads the all-time series 42-35, and the two teams split their two games last year, with the home team winning both games. The Panthers won the first meeting, 94-73, at the O’ on Jan. 14, and William Jewell won the game at the Mabee Center, 88-78, on Feb. 2.
About the Cardinals
Head coach Chris McCabe is in his third season as head coach at William Jewell and he has already led the team to more wins this season than they had all of last year. The Cardinals were 5-16 in 2020-21 and they went 10-18 with a 5-15 mark in the GLVC in his first season.
Kobe McKinley leads a balanced William Jewell scoring attack averaging 13.8 points. The junior from Olathe, Kansas, is also averaging 5.8 rebounds. Mason Alexander provides 12.6 points per game and Jordan Jermain is averaging 12.5.
Foster Back On DU Bench
Drury head coach Chris Foster returned to the Drury bench last week with the Panthers game at Illinois Springfield. A health issue, not COVID-19 related, sidelined Foster through December, but he returned to work at the team’s holiday break. Thursday’s game is his second contest back since Nov. 27.
Next Up
Thursday’s game is the first of three games in six days for the Panthers. On Saturday, Drury travels to long-time rival Rockhurst for 3 pm start. The Panthers conclude the road trip on Monday at Truman State.
