Cavaiani Claims Medalist Honors at Twin Oaks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri State’s Abby Cavaiani took medalist honors for the second consecutive year at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial on Tuesday (Sept. 14), firing a final-round 73 at Twin Oaks Country Club. The senior from Wales, Wis. posted 69-69-73–211, two under par, to post a two-stroke margin over Kiana Oshiro of Oral Roberts in the season opener for her third collegiate win.

ORU went wire-to-wire in taking the team title, holding off California Baptist, 874-882 over 54 holes. Murray State and Drake finished third with 903, while the Bears and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tied for fifth with 904. Oklahoma City (906), Wichita State and Bradley (908), and Austin Peay (909) rounded out the top 10. UTEP finished 11th with 913, followed by MSU Maroon (920), Western Illinois (926), Tarleton State (947), Drury (978) and Eastern Illinois (1012).

Individually, seniors Allison Bray and Faith Belmear were next-best for the Bears, both tying for 23rd while playing on the Maroon team. Bray shot 74-79-75–228, while Belmear had the same total on rounds of 78-75-75. Johanna Wollenhaupt tied for 29th with 82-73-74–229, while three Bears tied for 41st — Kayla Pfitzner, Faith Hopkins and Helena Bel all posted 232 totals. Bridget Schulte and Brook Newell tied for 59th at 238.

The Bears are idle next week before returning to action Sept. 27-29 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
