SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri State standout Abby Cavaiani fired a pair of 69’s Monday (Sept. 13) at Twin Oaks Country Club to take the lead after 36 holes at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial. The senior from Wales, Wis. is four under par with her 138 total, three clear of Oral Roberts’ Kiana Oshiro entering Tuesday’s final round.
The Bears are fourth in the team race after the first day as they struggled with 305 in the morning round before rebounding with a 294 in the afternoon for a 599 total. Oral Roberts has the lead after two rounds with 292-290-582, while California Baptist is second after posting 296-295–591. Drake is third, a stroke ahead of the Bears with 598 and Austin Peay is fifth at 602.
Murray State is sixth with 604, followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (605), Wichita State and Bradley (609), and Oklahoma City (610) rounding out the top 10. UTEP is 11th with 618, then Missouri State Maroon at 620, Western Illinois, Tarleton State, Drury and Eastern Illinois rounding out the field.
Individually, three Bears are tied for 39th — Brooke Newell, Johanna Wollenhaupt and Kayla Pfitzner — with 155 totals. Senior Bridget Schulte is tied for 49th after carding 80-77–157. The senior duo of Faith Belmear and Allison Bray, playing for the MSU Maroon team, are tied for 24th after posting 153 totals. Freshman Helena Bel shot 76-80 and is tied for 44th, while Faith Hopkins shot 79-79–158.
Tuesday’s final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
