Panthers end year 7th in final ACA School of the Year rankings marking best finish in program history

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Drury bass fishing team finished seventh nationally in the final Association of Collegiate Anglers Bass Pro Shops School of the Year national rankings, their highest finish in program history.

The University of Montevallo (Ala.) won the ACA national championship accumulating 18,415 points through various events during the 2020-21 season. McKendree finished second with 18,165 points, while Adrian (Mich.) was third with 16,615.

The Panthers finished with 14,820 points and ended the year one spot better than last year’s eighth-place finish. It marked Drury’s second straight season finishing in the top 10. The 2020-21 season featured 216 collegiate bass fishing programs competing and accumulating points on the ACA circuit.

“Our team features 12 anglers and we compete with three to five teams in most events while much of our competition competes with six to 15 teams,” said Drury bass fishing head coach Rick Emmitt. “The more teams you take, the better your odds for a high finish and more school of the year points. We had a fantastic finish based on the size of our program.”

The Panthers won the Major League Fishing collegiate national championship in March, had two tournament wins, a second place finish, two fourth-place finishes, a pair of fifth-place finishes, and four other placements in the top 10 during 2020-21.

“I want to congratulate our graduating seniors Grant Harris, Cameron Smith, Riley Fletcher, Lauren Plunkett, and Jack Rankin,” said Emmitt. “They have been a huge part of growing our program to a top 10 ranking.

“I would also like to thank the university for letting us compete in 2020-21.  With the Covid-19 pandemic, it was not easy, but we managed to travel without anyone getting the virus.  I also want to thank everyone who helped us raise travel funds throughout the year. Those of you who donated money, bought raffle tickets, donated items, purchased the numerous auction items – thank you. Without you, we would not be able to travel to all the events. Also, thank you to our sponsors for their support with fishing gear and travel funds.”

Drury starts the 2021-22 bass fishing season on June 16-17 at the Bassmaster College Series event in Saginaw Bay, Michigan.
