Track Squad Withdraws from NCAA Meet

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Missouri State has withdrawn from the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round currently taking place here due to positive COVID-19 test results within the team’s Tier I personnel, which consists of student-athletes, coaches, and staff.

Due to contact tracing, the team’s NCAA qualifiers will return to Springfield and withdraw from the three events it was scheduled to compete in Saturday – 100m dash, high jump and 4×100 relay.

“It’s a devastating situation because these athletes have worked so hard all year, both athletically and by being safe and responsible, to get the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage,” said head coach Jordan Fife.  “To be one day away from finishing things and not get that chance just really hurts.  I know our athletes are heartbroken and I feel for them.  We had such a unique, yet rewarding season and I know the team is as equally excited as I am to build off our success this year.”

“This is an unfortunate situation for our national qualifiers, and a heck of a way to end our athletics year,” said Director of Athletics Kyle Moats. “But, this situation exemplifies why it is imperative that our student-athletes take their responsibility to get vaccinated seriously. This could have easily been avoided, and instead it has spoiled a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
