SBU gets a run in the 9th to edge Drury 7-6

BOLIVAR, Mo.— Southwest Baptist loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and, with outs, drew a walk to win the game and hand Drury a 7-6 loss at Dodson Field in Bolivar on Saturday.
The Panthers end the year 14-26 and 14-22 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Bearcats end up 19-21 and 15-20 in the league.
The game was tied 2-2 going into the eighth when Drury took command scoring four runs. The Panthers took advantage of two SBU errors in the inning, added another run on a wild pitch, and capped the frame with an RBI single by Jackson Dierenfeldt.
The Bearcats drew even, though, with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Southwest Baptist drew a bases-loaded walk, scored two runs on a double by Sam Avila, then tied the contest on a sacrifice fly.
SBU held Drury off of the board in the top of the ninth, then loaded the bases for Ty McAninch, who took a 3-2 pitch in the dirt to win the game.
Dierenfeldt went 4 for 5 at the plate for Drury and drove in two runs, while DJ McNew went 3 for 5 with two runs and a double.
Brett Wilbanks (1-0) got the win in relief for Southwest Baptist. Drury used 10 pitchers in the game, and the loss went McNew (0-1), who moved from shortstop to pitcher in the bottom of the ninth in his first appearance on the mound this year.
Saturday’s loss marked the second time in three games the Panthers fell in a game decided in the last at-bat.
